The band's biography

In august 2008 they paid their 3rd contribution at Beatle Week Liverpool! Mal Evans Memorial Band plays a wide range of songs from ‘She Loves You’ to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ and much more: Even original stuff like Give Aways, Rutles and songs of Beatles related artists. Their gigs by these 5 guys and 1 girl (!) have become more and more surprising through the years. I almost forgot to mention the band’s ability to sing Beatles in 4 and ½ languages!

Some highlights of the past: In 2005 they received the Golden Apple Award from the Dutch fan club. Together with an 80-piece orchestra they did a McCartney tribute when he got 64 in 2006. In 2007 they released an album of Beatles songs in Dutch and received much national TV and radio exposure. June 2007 saw them play to a 10.000 strong enthusiastic audience at the Beatles Forever festival in Minsk, Belarus.

This year they enlarged the band to 6 members to make their sound even more Beatlish than it was. The group also played big theatre festivals like De Parade in Amsterdam, Capital of Culture in 1987. They’re looking forward to their 3rd gig with an orchestra in October and many more great projects to come.

In november 2008 their Dutch version of Back In The USSR was added to a compilation album, released by music magazine Revolver to celebrate the 40th aniversary of the White Album.

During the winter of 2009 Mal Evans Memorial Band came to an end. The ex-bandmembers look back at 5 wonderful years. To the peolple who came and saw us and to our fans we would like to say: Thanks a lot for all the great feed back we've got through the years, the unforgetable moments we went through (You should have seen it from the stage point of view!) and the enthousiasm we recieved from you all.
The biggest part of the line-up was wasn't tired of playing Beatles. The road of Mal Evans Memorial Band split up in two new and exiting directions: Love & Mersey, with Marcel, Jan, Martin and Roel and The Old Brown Shoes, with JP and Janneke.

The band name was a respectful homage to one of the 2 Beatles roadies. Relatives and friends of good old Mal even expressed their appreciation. Wow!

Janneke van Heeswijk - Guitar, keyboard, drums

Janneke van Heeswijk played in a number of bands and began studying drums and percussion at the Tilburg Conservatory in 1999. she graduated in 2003 and did a follow up course in Australia. She also played at The North Sea Jazz Festival and has contributed to many theater productions.

Marcel van der Linden - Vocals and percussion
Marcel van der Linden sang in a number of bands and has helped organize the music scene in his hometown of Tilburg. From 1999 to 2004 he performed as a DJ with the New Wave DJ team “Boys Do Cry”.

Martin Jansen - Keyboard and guitar
Martin Jansen has music, but above all the keyboard, running through his veins. His grandfather accompanied many an old silent movie live on the piano in the old Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. Martin himself supported as versatile keyboard player of the band Perspex 50 concerts of The Mo. He recorded an album with the Ton Bavelaar Collectief in 1988. In 1992 however he stopped performing in bands until he visited a concert of Paul McCartney in Arnhem in 2003, which ignited the old performance itch. Almost immediately he joined the Mal Evans Memorial Band, in which he lovingly played the keyboard as well as the guitar for almost 5 years.

Harry Eberhard - Guitar
began in a Beatles playback band when he was 8 years old and actually began playing when he was 11. Like Jan he has played just about every type of music there is. Recorded an album with RedBack in 2003 and was a member of Sgt. Pepper (another Beatles tribute band) for 18 years. Harry hopes to release an album of his own work in the near future.

Roel Weggemans - Guitar
already plucked the strings skillfully in the Mal Evan Memorial Band. From the age of 16 Roel played in various bands with different styles, from pop, blues, rhythm & blues, soul to rock & roll. The Blue Tomatoes, Mr Groove, Hark the Voice, which toured several times in Switzerland, and The Weekend Warriors, were some of the bands he performed with. Roel is furthermore an active member of another Beatles projects as well as the well-known zydecoband ‘Zydeco Fever’. For him one of the nicest things about choosing and playing Beatle songs is the fact that they manage to surprise you again and again; the arrangements are so musically superb that every song has something unexpected or special.

JP van Hoesel - Bass guitar
Al ruim 30 jaar actief in de muziek. Speelde in vele bands met eigen werk zoals Jan-Willem Roy, The Little Louis BLuesband, Blind Alex & the Creeps en Blues Attraction.
